If you are a writer, whether a professional or an amateur, I am sure that you will share the same feeling that I get whenever you sense, or smell, the stationery section of a Supermarket, or discover some quirky shop (online?) that sells amazing buffalo journals or some pens that ‘just feel right’ in your hands.
Your palms start to sweat, the butterflies in your stomach get startled and the credit card in your wallet/purse starts to burn through the cowhide prison that contains it, urging for that periodical conjugal visit with an EFTPOS machine, with your signature as the climactic ending when you know those items are now yours.
Rather dramatic and over the top sure, but no less true. I remember accidentally discovering the first ‘Typo’ concept store
in the Docklands in Melbourne. No sooner had I walked in then I walked out again with over $100.00 worth of product. Now you see the stores everywhere and I have to be really sneaky when I pay them a visit, which is kind of like a nerdy form
of adultery really.
We could spend hours trying to analyse the reason behind this ‘addiction’ or ‘fetish’,but I would rather stoke your fire and give you new avenues in which to acquire more than you can possibly imagine. So below I am going to list some ‘dealers’ of fine stationery that you can go crazy over;
1) Typo; http://shop.cottonon.com/typo/
Personally, this store is my favourite. Unique and unusual stationery and desk clutter that for the life of me I must own. I have a pen that I bought from the Docklands store over two years ago and it still works. The day it runs out is the day I die a little inside, and will have a new excuse to go to my closest store.
Most shopping centres have a ‘Typo’, which could be the reason my fiancé doesn’t want to go to them anymore. But the most
dangerous thing about Typo is the fact that it is quite affordable. You can get many pieces for less than $50.00 and if you have a friend that you know is crazy about writing and stationery, trust me when I say ‘listen to them’ when they tell you a store they love. You will never go wrong getting them a gift voucher to that store.
2) Kikki.K; http://www.kikki-k.com/
This store is owned by women, run by women and for women. Just to sum up, there is nothing‘male’ related in this store.
However, having said that, they do have nice products in various shades of baby clue, turquoise and aqua. Also pink, lots and lots of pink.
I am sure there are men that shop in this store. I had the fortunate experience of being present when my fiancé bought her
‘Wedding Planner’ and since obtaining the expensive book I have seen it a whole 5 times. Now I think it has joined the ranks of Davey Jones’ locker and Paris Hilton’s self-respect and is lost at sea.
3) Smiggle; http://www.smiggle.com/
I do not know much about this store, but have breezed past it a few times and on each occasion the cacophony of colours
deters me from entering the store. However, after reviewing the online store I can say that they are very well priced and have an immense selection of products available for purchase.
This is a great place for any budding young writers in primary school. The colours will amaze their friends and make them
the talk of the school yard.
4) NoteMaker; http://notemaker.com.au/
To me this place is more for the ‘professional’ writers, especially judging by the price tags of some of the items. But to be honest, this company is more dedicated to the ‘Stationery Enthusiasts’ than the previously mentioned companies. Where the others were well priced and design orientated, NoteMaker’s products are pure quality. Designed by writers and note takers, for writers and note takers everywhere.
What sets them apart? Just have a look at their website. They provide you with hints and tips on how to set up your desk
(sure, they sell everything hinted at, but damn if it doesn’t look good). They are set up for all sorts of social media;
- Twitter
- Facebook
- Blogger
- Instagram
If you are serious about your writing and
like to have quality tools, then this is the place to go. I get excited just
looking at the pictures on this site.
For now that is all. Happy writing people.
